Liberty Elementary teacher Vanessa Olivares is the 2018 Bilingual/ESL Education Association of the Metroplex (BEAM) 2018 Teacher of the Year. BEAM selects one bilingual teacher from the DFW area to be recognized during the annual symposium in April.
A teacher for eight years, the past four in WSISD, Olivares is a second grade dual language teacher. \
Bilingual/ESL teachers are recognized who demonstrate outstanding teaching and exemplary professional service. Recipients submit an extensive application that includes their philosophy of education, community service, professional development and experience.
"My classroom is an engaging environment where risks can be taken and are embraced," she said. "My role is that of facilitator and change agent as I give my students the platform to lead classroom discussions and learning." \
She said, "Walking into my second home, you will see a mixed group of Spanish language learners and English language learners working cohesively and supporting each other in their daily tasks."
The award is also based on letters of recommendation from students, parents and colleagues.
Olivares will advance to the state competition.
