The White Settlement ISD HOPE Squads held the district's first ever HOPE Rally on Feb. 12 to kick off WSISD's HOPE Week.
The rally included dance performances by the Liberty and West Elementary HOPE Squads, a musical performance by Brewer High School HOPE Squad members and motivational speaker Tory Gant. The entire program was presented by the students.
WSISD is the first Texas school district to implement the HOPE Squad suicide prevention program district-wide.
Fourth through 12th grade students––nominated by their peers––are trained to watch for at-risk students, provide friendship, identify warning signs, and seek help from adults. The goal is to reduce self-destructive behavior and youth suicide by training, building, and creating change in schools and communities.
More than 200 students and employees participate in the HOPE Squad program, and WSISD has equipped more than 300 students, employees and citizens with the Question Persuade Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training.
During HOPE Week, students at every school participated in a variety activities designed to promote hope and encourage every student to choose kind.
"Our HOPE Squads are spreading the message that every person has value, purpose and potential," said district HOPE Squad Advisor Desiree Coyle.
"Through the HOPE Squads and our Choose Kind Campaign, we will continue to provide opportunities so our kids can demonstrate how to show kindness to others, how to be a friend, and how to cope with the ups and downs of life."

The HOPE Squads from every school had a chance to meet with one another prior to the rally. Brewer High School students led the kids in chants and team building activities. Pictured are students from Liberty Elementary and Brewer High School.
Tory Gant inspires the audience with his message of how an individual's words and actions can impact another individual and instill hope.
